8th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP8), Geneva, Switzerland

The 8th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP8) of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) of the World health organization (WHO) was successfully held from 1st to 6th October 2018 in Geneva, Switzerland. This is a biennial session with the participation of the parties, non-parties, United Nations and other inter-governmental organisations and civil society representatives to update the global tobacco treaty (FCTC).

Over 1,200 participants attended the COP8 session and the discussions were mainly projected under the context of the “Sustainable Developments Goals and the future of tobacco control on the road to a healthier and sustainable world”. Main achievement of COP8 was the agreement of the parties to adopt the Medium Term Strategic Framework (Global Strategy) and pilot the implementation review mechanism (IRM) which will strengthen the global implementation of FCTC.

Dr. Manuja Perera, Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT) participated as a member of delegation of the Framework Convention Alliance on Tobacco Control, an alliance of non-governmental oganisations to implement the FCTC.
