Newspaper Article on Safeguarding from Deadly Trap

RBJ Suranga has successfully completed the first and second phases of the short course “Investigating tobacco industry interference on public health policies and actions”, jointly organised with the CCT and the Young Professionals’ Alliance for Health (YouPAH).

As an extended activity of the course, he has written a newspaper article based on the findings of the investigation conducted during the short course. The newspaper article titled “මාරක දැලෙන් මිදෙමු” (Safeguarding from deadly trap) was published on 14th June 2026 in the Sunday Divaina newspaper. The article explained the gaps in law enforcement, especially in the National Authority on Tobacco Control (NATA) Act and the contribution of the CCT through the research findings to tobacco control in Sri Lanka. He further proposed a few solutions, which included introducing plain packaging, a scientific tax formula for tobacco products, implementing a fine system for users considering the environmental and public health harm and banning smokeless tobacco products.
