Tobacco industry, The Corona epidemic and Commit to quit

To commemorate World No Tobacco Day on May 31, Centre for Combatting Tobacco (CCT) in partnership with Young Professionals’ Alliance for Health (YouPAH) organisd a panel discussion on zoom technology on 30th May 2021. The main target groups were young professionals, journalists, tobacco control activists, university students and the general public.

The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is commit to quit. Accordingly, the webinar was titled Tobacco Industry, COVID-19 and Committing to Quit. Dr. Asiri Karunanayake, The President YouPAH, did the introduction, describing the purpose of this session. Then four sessions followed under the themes of Impact of tobacco on the COVID-19 pandemic (by Dr. Suharshi Silva, Consultant Respiratory Physician from National Hospital of Respiratory Diseases); Tobacco industry tactics during COVID-19 (by Dr. Manuja Perera, Consultant Community Physician and Editor CCT); Quitting, quitting and other (by Dr. Diyanath Samarasinghe, Consultant Psychiatrist); Committing to quit and helping to quit (by Dr. Mahesh Rajasuriya, Consultant Psychiatrist and Director CCT) and Community engagement and actions to commit to quit (by Dr. S H Piyasumana, Medical Officer of Health).

The program and the question and answer session that followed were moderated by Dr. Udara Amarasinghe and Mr. Akhila Nilaweera representing YouPAH. Around 150 participants attended the event and watched the live streaming via Facebook.
