Tobacco Unmasked: Website Launch and the Networking Forum

Tobacco Unmasked: Website Launch and the Networking Forum was held on 7th July 2017, from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm at the Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo. The official information portal of Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT) on tobacco industry influences at different levels in Sri Lanka and the region, was ceremoniously launched by the Guest of Honour – Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake, the vice chancellor of the University of Colombo. Many distinguished guests and activists who actively participate in tobacco prevention from different fields attended this event.
A speech on implementation of FCTC Article 5.3 and Tobacco Observatories was done by Dr. Palitha Abeykoon, Chairperson, National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA). Introduction of Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT) and TobaccoUnmasked website was done by Dr. Mahesh Rajasuriya, Director, CCT. This was followed by a session how to navigate by Dr Manuja Perera, the editor of the website.
The second session of the program was on Tobacco Industry Monitoring: Concepts & Application. Dr. Mahesh Rajasuriya discussed about tobacco industry as a vector of disease. “The truth about tobacco industry and how to find it” was stated by Dr. Manuja Perera. In relation to this Mr. Sampath de Seram from Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) explained tobacco industry tactics in influencing policy development and implementation in Sri Lanka. Dr. Diyanath Samarasinghe discussed the Role of general public and health workers in monitoring and counteracting industry tactics.
The third and final session on Stakeholder Contribution & Way Forward was moderated by Prof. Narada Warnasuriya, Chairperson, Expert Committee on Tobacco, Alcohol and Illicit Drugs of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) with the CCT team.
