TobaccoUnmasked Media Wiki’s 3rd Anniversary Celebration

Tobacco Unmasked is the official information portal of the Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT) based on a media wiki platform. It contains evidence based information on the tobacco industry. TU website has Sinhala and Tamil mirror wikis too. TobaccoUnmasked celebrated its 3rd year anniversary on 7th July 2020 at the board room, faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

A diverse group of stakeholders including Academics, representative from National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA), representative from WHO country office Sri Lanka, representative from Sri Lanka Medical Association, representative from College of Pulmonologists, , representative from College of Psychiatrists,  representatives from Institute of Oral Health Maharagama and representatives from Alcohol and Drug Information Centre Sri Lanka, representatives from Institute of Policy Studies, , representatives from media attended the event.

Director, CCT Dr. Mahesh Rajasuriya welcomed the gathering and gave a brief Introduction to Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT). Dr. Manuja Perera, Editor, TobaccoUnmasked delivered a speech on TobaccoUnmasked media wiki. The TobaccoUnmasked 3rd year anniversary celebration post was ceremonially launched by Professor. Chandrika N Wijeyaratne, Vice Chancellor University of Colombo and she delivered a speech. In her speech she highlighted the need for persistent monitoring to protect universities from Industry manipulations.

TobaccoUnmasked‘s birthday cake was cut by Professor. Chandrika N Wijeyaratne, Vice Chancellor University ofColombo and Professor. Vajira H. W. Dissanayake Dean Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. Following that Recap of CCT pathway was conducted by CCT team.

Further the former Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo- Professor. Jennifer Perera was felicitated by the CCT team and the former dean delivered a speech. In her speech she praised the activities of CCT and she said that she wanted the CCT to be an own centre of the University of Colombo, faculty of medicine. Professor. Vajira H. W. Dissanayake Dean Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo also spoke at the event. He promised to cooperate with CCT activities and he called the stakeholders to work together.

At the end of the event a facilitated discussion was held on the way forward. Dr. Palitha Abeykoon, former Chairperson of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) suggested CCT to involve in national policy implementation level and to target higher level policy makers/politicians to implement the policies. Professor Carukshi Arambepola department of community medicine faculty of medicine university of Colombo suggested to conduct a project with the involvement of university students to increase the awareness among students.

Dr. DiyanathSamarasinghe, consultant psychiatrist mentioned that the tobacco control measures and how tobacco sales reduced in the 90s and he mentioned that the same strategy should be strengthened in present to reduce the smokeless tobacco sale. Further he mentioned the failure in smokeless tobacco control. Dr.Hemantha, Consultant in Community dentistry showed his interest to control smokeless tobacco and to work with CCT. Dr. Alfah Sadikeen, consultant pulmonologist also showed his interest to work with CCT.

Stakeholders who attended the event, actively engaged in the discussions, expressing their passion and enthusiasm towards exposing the industry manipulations.
